How to convert LAS to PLY

  1. Upload a LAS file, or try the synthetic LAS sample.
  2. Inspect the imported cloud. PLY is already selected as the output format.
  3. Click Convert cloud, then download the new PLY result.

Try an example

The LAS sample contains 1,000 colored points with intensity and classification. Convert it to PLY, then open Data & processing details to see the retained properties.

Before you start

XYZ coordinates, intensity, classification and RGB when present are retained. LAS 16-bit RGB becomes 8-bit RGB. Headers, CRS metadata, GPS time, return information and extra dimensions are not exported. This is not a lossless LAS archive.

Are the coordinates reprojected?

No. Scaled source coordinates are used without reprojection or unit conversion. Keep the original LAS file if you need its coordinate reference system metadata.

Files stay in a temporary 2-hour session. Switching tools in this tab keeps your uploaded clouds and results. Read about file privacy.

Understand what survives LAS conversion

Keep the source when metadata matters

PLY stores the working point cloud produced by this importer. The LAS header and coordinate reference system metadata are not carried over. Keep the unchanged original alongside the PLY if another application needs that information.

Check colors in the destination application

LAS color channels use 16-bit values; this converter maps them to 8-bit PLY channels. A LAS file without RGB will not gain recorded colors through conversion. The viewer may color an uncolored cloud by height, which is a display effect rather than a source RGB attribute.

Common questions

Is converting LAS to PLY lossless?

No. Supported point attributes are retained, but metadata is omitted and color precision changes. The original upload download is the option for preserving the exact uploaded bytes.

Should I subsample while converting?

Conversion alone does not reduce the point count. If you need fewer points, first inspect the imported cloud, then create a separate subsampled result and download that PLY.

Service limits: 100 MB per upload, 5,000,000 points per cloud, one running job, 2-hour sessions. E57 merges up to 64 scans using stored poses, with common RGB/intensity only. Registration and cloud-to-cloud distance are not available.
