How to use this tool

  1. Upload a PLY point cloud, or try the colored pavilion sample.
  2. Inspect the cloud and keep XYZ selected as the output format.
  3. Click Convert cloud and download the XYZ text file.

Try an example

Convert the pavilion sample to XYZ. Each line in the downloaded text has three whitespace-separated numbers: X, Y and Z. There is no header or color column.

Before you start

XYZ contains coordinates only. Colors, normals, intensity, classification and other attributes are omitted. Mesh faces and PLY list properties are not supported. Units are unchanged; no coordinate-system conversion is applied.

Why does the XYZ result have no colors?

This XYZ export writes only three coordinate columns. Keep the source PLY, or choose PLY output, when you need supported colors and other attributes. Select a PLY asset to continue cropping or subsampling.

Files stay in a temporary 2-hour session. Switching tools in this tab keeps your uploaded clouds and results. Read about file privacy.

Use the XYZ text in another application

Read three columns in order

Each output line contains X, Y and Z separated by whitespace, with no header. Coordinates are written with twelve decimal places. Your destination application should read three numeric columns in that order; the decimal formatting does not increase source accuracy.

Carry units and coordinate-system information separately

The file does not identify a unit or coordinate reference system. The numbers use the source coordinates without reprojection. Record the original units and reference system separately when you pass the XYZ file to another tool.

Keep a PLY when you need to continue editing

The XYZ result can be previewed and downloaded here, but cannot be used as the input for another operation. Select the original or another PLY result to continue cropping or subsampling.

Common questions

Can I upload a PLY mesh?

This tool accepts PLY point clouds without mesh faces or other nonempty elements. Export the vertices as a point cloud in your source application before uploading.

Why is the text file larger than my PLY?

Text coordinates can require more bytes than binary PLY coordinates. XYZ is intended for simple coordinate exchange; it is not a compression format.
