How to convert LAZ to PLY

  1. Upload a LAZ file, or try the synthetic LAZ sample.
  2. Wait for decompression and import. Inspect the cloud with PLY preselected.
  3. Click Convert cloud and download the new result.

Try an example

Try the LAZ sample to import 1,000 colored points from a compressed file. The PLY result contains the points and supported attributes, not the compressed LAZ container.

Before you start

A small compressed file can contain many points; the 5,000,000-point limit still applies after decompression. PLY output can be larger than LAZ input. Retained: XYZ, intensity, classification and RGB when present. RGB becomes 8-bit; headers, CRS, GPS time, return information and extra dimensions are omitted.

Can I convert the PLY result back to LAZ here?

LAZ output is not supported. Download original upload returns the unchanged LAZ source while the session is available. Keep it if you need a compressed archive and the original metadata.

Files stay in a temporary 2-hour session. Switching tools in this tab keeps your uploaded clouds and results. Read about file privacy.

Plan for decompression and output size

A smaller upload can produce a larger result

LAZ compresses the source point data. This site writes binary PLY without LAZ compression, so the download can be larger even when the number of points stays the same. That size increase alone does not indicate duplicated points.

Check the count after decompression

The upload-size limit and point-count limit are separate. A compressed LAZ below the upload-size limit may still exceed the allowed point count. If it does, prepare a smaller region or reduced source with another tool before uploading.

Keep a compressed original for later

PLY is the working output here; LAZ export is not available. Download original upload preserves the compressed file exactly during the session. Keep it separately if you need a long-term source copy.

Common questions

Will renaming .laz to .ply work?

No. The file contents must be decoded and written in the destination format. Use the conversion result rather than changing the source filename.

How can I make the PLY result smaller?

Crop to the region you need or subsample the imported cloud. Both create new results, so you can retain the original and compare the point counts before downloading.

Service limits: 100 MB per upload, 5,000,000 points per cloud, one running job, 2-hour sessions. E57 merges up to 64 scans using stored poses, with common RGB/intensity only. Registration and cloud-to-cloud distance are not available.
